The Movie
Everything about the film Les Amitiés particulières (1964) based on Roger Peyrefitte’s 1944 novel →
Overview
In a Catholic boarding school, an older student and a younger boy form a tender, “special friendship“, that collides with the institution’s rules, loyalties, and secrets.
Synopsis
Fourteen year old Georges de Sarre arrives at a strict Catholic boarding school where he becomes enchanted by twelve year old Alexandre Motier, whose angelic beauty and gentle nature captivate both students and faculty. As their friendship deepens through exchanged letters, shared moments, and quiet confidences, the boys navigate the school’s rigid hierarchy and unspoken rules. When their bond attracts the attention of watchful priests who monitor for “special friendships,” Georges must choose between protecting Alexandre and preserving his own position. Set against the austere beauty of a mountain monastery, Delannoy’s adaptation captures both the tenderness of adolescent connection and the tragic consequences of institutional repression.
